Wonderful Roberta! Lived across from us. Great Kaslo Family.
That was a very good interview with Roberta, I have memories of that happening as we lived not far from the reserivor.
Thanks, Roberta, for telling this important story of how your fast actions saved a young life! Thanks, Neil and Louise, too, for sharing, for encouraging, and facilitating this significant Kaslo heritage project!!
Great job and great idea Neil. We need to capture these stories now!
Thank you Barb, I very much agree! I’m so grateful Louise and our local seniors association included me in this.
When I first moved back here, Roberta was the ‘Sears’ lady. I always enjoyed my interactions with her and I certainly enjoyed hearing this story of her bravery.
Roberta’s story is a big part of my family history and we are forever grateful for her actions. Thanks Roberta! I have fond memories of playing in your coal shed as a youngster with Mark! And Mark and I trying to keep up with our older brothers, Len and Gordie. Glad Len was around to bother although I think him and Gordie would have preferred we left them alone. I look forward to more stories from our seniors. This is a great project!
Yes, this is a historic Kaslo event. My maternal grandmother (Annie Morton) was a senior living in her home at the north end of Washington St., on the west side, just a couple of doors from the Garrett’s home. I remember the reservoir was large & took up the whole property where the Community Garden is located in 2019. The wooden boards that encircled the reservoir were dark (weathered/unpainted) & mounted vertically (at least 6 ft high) tight together & seemed impenetrable to me as a kid. I was aware there was concrete & water inside but I never tried to explore even though I did wonder about it as I walked past on the sidewalk. The reservoir was open to the sky. Next door, on Washington St., was a former Fire Hall — I remember seeing the old canvas hoses on reels. Thanks to Roberta, Leonard is still with us! Glad you & Roberta were able to get this event recorded. (Note: Roberta has long Kaslo roots, growing up as on of Anne & Bob (friends of my parents) Gilker’s kids. Roberta & husband, Buddy Garrett, were very active in several community organizations during their family years)
